January 20: This is the Day!
Scripture
“This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
Psalm 118:24
This is one of those verses most of us know by heart, even if we couldn’t always tell you where it’s found. Because of its familiarity, it can sound almost casual, like a polite reminder to be thankful and move on. But there is far more depth here than a simple encouragement to have a good attitude.
“This is the day the Lord has made.” The Lord, the Creator of all things, the One who spoke the world into existence and formed humanity from the dust, is the One who has made this day. Nothing about today is accidental. God works with purpose and intention, and He has chosen for you to be alive right now, in this moment, in this day. That alone invites us to slow down and pay attention.
Take a deep breath and remember where that breath comes from. The air in your lungs is a gift. The strength in your body, the beating of your heart, the ability to see, hear, and move through this world are all sustained by God’s grace. This day exists because He willed it to exist, and you are here to experience it. There are things God desires to do in this world, and He has uniquely placed each of us within His purposes.
When we begin to grasp what is wrapped up in that simple statement, the response becomes clear. Rejoicing is not forced optimism, it is grounded gratitude. We are not promised tomorrow, but we have today. So let us receive it as the gift it is. Rejoice in the day God has given you. Be glad that you are here. And as you live this day before the Lord, look for ways to bless others along the way, joining God in the good work He is already doing.
Reflection
1. How do you typically approach each day, as a gift to receive or something to get through?
2. What simple blessings today might you be overlooking because of busyness, worry, or familiarity?
3. How could choosing joy and gratitude today shape the way you treat the people you encounter?
Prayer
Thank the Lord for the gift of this day and for the life, breath, and opportunities He has given you. Ask Him to help you slow down, notice His presence, and receive today with gratitude rather than anxiety. Pray for a heart that rejoices in God’s goodness and for eyes that are open to ways you can bless others as you walk through the day He has made.
