Today Choose Trust

Scripture

Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.

—Philippians 4:6–7 (The Message)

Paul gives us a simple but profound command for dealing with anxiety: “Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray.” He invites us to see the very moments that tempt us to spiral into worry as opportunities to turn our faces toward God. Our anxieties don’t have to become dead ends; they can become pathways to deeper communion with Him as we turn our worries into prayers.

This peace that God offers isn’t a magical feeling that simply appears, nor is it a denial of our problems. It is a supernatural calm that settles in our hearts when we consciously hand over our concerns to the One who is both sovereign over the universe and intimately attentive to our lives. When we pray, we entrust our worries to a good Father who hears us and responds by giving us a peace that transcends our circumstances.

Eugene Peterson’s paraphrase captures the goal beautifully. “It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.” This is the great exchange.

“Worry is the antithesis of trust. You simply cannot do both. They are mutually exclusive.”
— Elisabeth Elliot¹

Worry and trust cannot occupy the same heart at the same time. When we give our worries to Christ, He gives us His peace in return, and worry loses its grip as trust takes its place.

This is Christ’s invitation to you today. Stop trying to carry burdens you were never meant to bear, and bring them to your Father in prayer instead. Choose today which one will rule your heart: worry, or trust. Let it be trust.

Reflection

  1. What worries or concerns are you carrying right now that you need to turn into prayer?
  2. How does remembering God’s love and sovereignty help you face uncertainty with peace?
  3. What is one specific, practical step you can take today to place Christ back at the center of your thoughts, “displacing” a persistent worry you have?

Prayer
Ask God to help you release your worries into His hands. Pray for a deeper trust in His care, and for the peace of Christ to guard your heart and mind.
