Trust and Delight
Scripture
Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong;
for like the grass they will soon wither,
like green plants they will soon die away.
Trust in the Lord and do good;
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Psalm 37:1–4 (NIV)
Things are not always as they seem. When you look around, it can appear that those who act wickedly are the ones prospering, while those who walk with integrity struggle to get ahead. But the psalmist reminds us not to be deceived. The success of the wicked is temporary. Like grass that quickly withers, their moment in the sun will soon fade.
So what do you do when life seems unfair? This psalm gives clear direction: “Trust in the Lord and do good.” Instead of fretting over what others have, you’re called to keep your heart anchored in God’s faithfulness and stay committed to doing what is right. The Lord is your provider and sustainer.
“The first is a precept written upon sparkling jewels, ‘Delight thyself in the Lord.’ The second is a promise priceless beyond rubies, ‘He shall give thee the desires of thine heart.'”
— Charles Spurgeon¹
That’s the whole exchange in one verse: a command worth treasuring, and a promise worth trusting. When you delight in Him, your desires begin to align with His will. He places the right longings within you, desires that reflect His heart and goodness. When God Himself becomes your greatest delight, everything else finds its proper place.
So trust Him today. Don’t be distracted by what others have or how things appear. Anchor your heart in His character, do what is good, and let delight in Him, not comparison with others, be what shapes your desires from here on out.
Reflection
- When have you struggled with envy or frustration at the success of others? How did you respond?
- What does it mean for you to “take delight in the Lord” in your current season of life?
- How might God be shaping your desires to align more fully with His will?
Prayer
Ask God to quiet your heart when you’re tempted to compare or complain. Pray for a spirit of trust that rests in His timing and faithfulness. Ask Him to shape your desires so that what you long for most is more of Him.
