January 13: Walk as Children of Light
Scripture
“For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true. Carefully determine what pleases the Lord. Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them. It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret. But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them, for the light makes everything visible.”
— Ephesians 5:8–14 (NLT)
Paul reminds the believers in Ephesus of a simple but powerful truth: they are no longer who they once were. There was a time when they lived in darkness, unaware of God and cut off from His life. But that has changed. Through Christ, light has entered their lives. They have been transferred from darkness into light, from death into life. This is not just a shift in theology or belief; it is a complete change of identity.
Because of that change, Paul urges them to live differently. “Live as people of light,” he says. He uses the image of fruitfulness—that this light within us naturally produces things that are good, right, and true. In other words, what God has placed within us should now begin to shape how we live outwardly. Our choices, our words, and our actions are meant to reflect the light we have received. Faith is not meant to stay hidden in the private corners of our hearts; it is meant to bear visible fruit in our lives.
However, living as people of light requires intention. Paul calls us to “carefully determine what pleases the Lord.” This means we do not drift passively through life, nor do we simply follow the cultural currents around us. Instead, we learn to discern God’s heart and align our daily walk with His ways. We no longer participate in deeds of darkness—not because we are superior to the world, but because those things simply no longer fit who we are.
And as we walk in the light, something happens. Darkness is exposed. Light does not have to shout, attack, or force its way in to do its work. It simply shines. When the light of Christ is allowed to shine through our lives, what is hidden is revealed, and what is broken can be healed. Paul’s call is both simple and challenging: remember who you are, live in the light you’ve been given, and let that light do its work.
Reflection
1. Do you tend to view your faith mostly as a private belief, or do you see it as a light that should be visible to others?
2. What is one area of your life where you might be “drifting” rather than carefully determining what pleases the Lord?
3. How can your reactions or attitude today bring “light” into a difficult or dark situation at work or home?
Prayer
Thank the Lord for transferring you from darkness into His light. Ask Him for the wisdom to discern what pleases Him today. Pray that your life would naturally produce the fruit of goodness, righteousness, and truth, exposing darkness not with judgment, but with the light of His presence.
