November 10: What is Most Valuable to You?
Scripture
“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field. Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it.”
—Matthew 13:44–46 (NLT)
Jesus paints a picture of two people who stumble upon something so valuable that they joyfully give up everything they have to make it their own. One finds a hidden treasure, the other a priceless pearl. The common thread is they both recognize that what they’ve found is worth infinitely more than anything they might lose. That is what the Kingdom of Heaven is like. When you see it for what it is, when your eyes are opened to its beauty and power, giving up everything else is not a burden but a joy.
But how often do we live as though the treasures of this world are more precious? Our comfort, our possessions, our ambitions tempt us with promises that fade like a mirage. The closer you get, the more they vanish. We chase after success, control, and recognition, only to find that they cannot satisfy the soul. The Kingdom of God, by contrast, is eternal. It doesn’t disappear at the end of the road. It grows richer, deeper, and more alive the closer we draw to the King.
To confess Jesus as Lord is not just to say the words; it is to surrender ownership of our lives. It means letting go of the illusion that we are in control and joyfully entrusting everything to Him. When we finally see the worth of the treasure before us, we stop clinging to what cannot last. The idols we’ve been holding on to—our safety, possessions, relationships, or pride—begin to loosen their grip because we’ve found something better. As missionary Jim Elliot once wrote, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.”¹
The question Jesus leaves us with is deeply personal: What is most valuable to you? What are you unwilling to release? The man who found the treasure didn’t hesitate; he sold everything in his excitement. That kind of joy still belongs to those who discover the surpassing worth of Christ. Once you’ve seen the treasure of His Kingdom, nothing else compares.
Reflection
1. What “fields” or “pearls” have captured your heart more than the Kingdom of God?
2. How does understanding the eternal nature of God’s Kingdom change the way you see your possessions or ambitions?
3. What would it look like for you to joyfully surrender everything to Christ today?
Prayer
Ask God to reveal the things you’ve been holding back from Him. Pray for the courage and joy to surrender fully, trusting that what He offers is of greater worth than anything this world can give.
