February 16: While It Is Still Today

Scripture
“Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. You must warn each other every day, while it is still ‘today,’ so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ. Remember what it says: ‘Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled.’”
Hebrews 3:12–15 (NLT)

The writer of Hebrews speaks with urgency and tenderness. “Be careful.” Not fearful, but watchful. The greatest danger to our faith is not always outward rebellion. More often, it is quiet drift. A neglected prayer life. A compromise no one sees. A slow turning of the heart away from the living God.

Sin deceives before it hardens. That is why we are commanded to encourage one another daily. We are not meant to follow Jesus alone. We need brothers and sisters who will lovingly warn us, remind us of truth, and call us back when we begin to drift. Community keeps our hearts soft. Isolation allows them to grow calloused.

And then comes the promise. If we remain faithful to the end, trusting God as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ. Let that sink in. All that belongs to Christ. His life. His inheritance. And His Kingdom. The Christian life is not merely about escaping judgment. It is about sharing in the fullness of Christ Himself.

So the question presses in on us: when you hear His voice, will you respond? Or will you harden your heart? Today is still today. His voice is still speaking. And His grace is still drawing you back. The same God who warns us is the God who holds us, strengthens us, and carries us all the way home as we trust Him.

Reflection
1. Are there areas in your life where your heart has begun to drift or grow indifferent toward God?

2. Who in your life has permission to warn you, encourage you, and help keep your heart soft toward the Lord?

3. What would it look like today to respond quickly and obediently to God’s voice rather than delaying or resisting Him?

Prayer
Ask the Lord to search your heart and reveal any drift or hardness that may be forming. Pray for courage to receive loving correction from others and to offer it gently in return. Thank Him for still speaking to us today and for His grace that helps us remain faithful to the end.
