Willing and Worthy
Scripture
“Large crowds followed Jesus as he came down the mountainside. Suddenly, a man with leprosy approached him and knelt before him. ‘Lord,’ the man said, ‘if you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean.’
Jesus reached out and touched him. ‘I am willing,’ he said. ‘Be healed!’ And instantly the leprosy disappeared.
Then Jesus said to him, ‘Don’t tell anyone about this. Instead, go to the priest and let him examine you. Take along the offering required in the law of Moses for those who have been healed of leprosy. This will be a public testimony that you have been cleansed.'”
— Matthew 8:1–4 (NLT)
Notice what this man does not question. He does not doubt that Jesus can heal him. His question is whether Jesus will. “Lord, if you are willing.” That little word if carries a lot of weight. It is the voice of someone who has spent years being avoided, dismissed, and pushed to the outside. He believed in Jesus’ power. He just was not sure someone like him was worth the effort.
So what does Jesus do? He touches him. And He did not have to. In other places Jesus heals from a distance, speaks a word and it is done. But here, with this particular man, He reaches out and makes physical contact. That would have been shocking to everyone watching. Lepers were required to live outside the community, warn others by crying out “Unclean,” and were completely cut off from normal human contact. No embraces, no closeness, no one willing to come near. To touch a leper meant risking becoming unclean yourself. Jesus did not hesitate for a second.
That is because this was never just about the leprosy. It was about dignity. It was about a man who had been unseen and untouchable for so long he had started to wonder if God even noticed him. And Jesus answers that question before He says a single word, just by reaching out His hand. The Kingdom He brings is not only about miraculous power. It is about mercy. It is about being willing to draw close to the very person everyone else has been stepping around.
Then He sends the man to the priests as a living testimony. He wasn’t just made clean, he was welcomed back. He could worship again, return to his community, and stand as proof that God sees the lowly and lifts them up. That is the gospel of the Kingdom in one quiet, tender moment.
And if you have ever wondered whether Jesus is willing to meet you in your place of need, this story gives you your answer. He is willing. And you are loved!
Reflection
1. Do you ever struggle to believe that Jesus is willing, not just able, to meet you in your place of need?
2. Who in your life might feel like they are too far gone or unworthy of being seen?
3. How might you reflect the heart of Jesus by reaching out to someone others tend to avoid?
Prayer
Thank Jesus for seeing you and being willing to draw near. Ask Him to shape your heart to reflect His, especially toward those who feel unseen, unworthy, or untouchable.
