November 19 — You Are Blessed
Scripture
“You are blessed when you are at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule.
You are blessed when you feel you have lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you.
You are blessed when you are content with just who you are, no more and no less. That is the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that cannot be bought.
You are blessed when you have worked up a good appetite for God. He is food and drink in the best meal you will ever eat.
You are blessed when you care. At the moment of being “care full,” you find yourselves cared for.
You are blessed when your inside world, your mind and heart, is put right. Then you can see God in the outside world.
You are blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That is when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family.
You are blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God’s kingdom.”
Matthew 5:3–10, The Message
This alternate rendering of the Beatitudes is so beautiful. Take a moment to read it again. This time slowly, meditating on the truth found in each verse.
We tend to think we are blessed when life is easy, when our plans work out, when we feel strong and in control. Jesus says we are blessed when we come to the end of our rope. When there is less of our own strength, our own wisdom, and our own illusions of control, there is more room for God and his rule in us. The place we are trying hardest to avoid is often the very place where God meets us most deeply.
Loss and grief cut deep. When you lose what is most dear to you, it can feel like the ground has disappeared under your feet. Jesus doesn’t minimize that pain and He doesn’t rush us past it. Instead, He promises that in that very place of heartbreak, we are held by the One who is most dear to us. It is often in those seasons that we discover the tenderness, nearness, and faithfulness of God in ways we never knew before. The blessing is not that the loss is good, but that God does not waste it. He draws close and holds you fast.
We are also blessed when we learn to live free from comparison and grasping. When you are content with who God made you to be, with the story he is writing in your life, and with what he has placed in your hands, you discover you already possess what really matters. When you hunger and thirst for God more than you hunger for recognition, success, or comfort, you find a satisfaction this world cannot offer. As He puts your inner world right, your mind and heart start to align with His. You begin to see God at work all around you, even in small, ordinary moments.
And then the blessing overflows into how you relate to others. You become someone who helps people work together instead of tearing each other apart. You care, you show mercy, you pursue peace. You live as a true son or daughter in the family of God. Sometimes that kind of life will bring misunderstanding or even persecution. Yet even there, Jesus says you are blessed. The pressure and pushback only drive you deeper into His Kingdom, deeper into His presence, and deeper into dependence on His grace. Wherever you are today, you can know this: in Jesus, you are not abandoned. You are seen, you are held, and you are blessed, even in the places that hurt the most.
Reflection
1. Is there an area of life where you feel “at the end of your rope” right now? If so, what might it look like to invite God’s rule and presence into that place?
2. How have loss, disappointment, or grief opened you up to experience God’s nearness in a deeper way than before?
3. What is one practical way you can cultivate a deeper hunger for God this week, and how might that shape the way you love and serve the people around you?
Prayer
Ask God to meet you in your places of weakness and need. Pray for a deeper hunger for him, a content heart, and the grace to bring mercy and peace to others throughout your day.
