You Are Blessed

Scripture
“You’re blessed when you’re at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule.
You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you.
You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are, no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought.
You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.
You’re blessed when you care. At the moment of being ‘care-full,’ you find yourselves cared for.
You’re blessed when you get your inside world, your mind and heart, put right. Then you can see God in the outside world.
You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family.
You’re blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God’s kingdom.”
—Matthew 5:3–10 (The Message)

This rendering of Jesus’ words is so beautiful that it’s worth reading again, slowly, letting each line sink in. We tend to think we are blessed when life is easy, when our plans work out, when we feel strong and in control. Jesus says we are blessed when we come to the end of our rope. When there is less of our own strength, our own wisdom, and our own illusions of control, there is more room for God and His rule in us. The place we are trying hardest to avoid is often the very place where God meets us most deeply.

Loss and grief cut deep. When you lose what is most dear to you, it can feel like the ground has disappeared under your feet. Jesus doesn’t minimize that pain, and He doesn’t rush us past it. Instead, He promises that in that very place of heartbreak, we are held by the One who is most dear to us. It is often in those seasons that we discover the tenderness, nearness, and faithfulness of God in ways we never knew before. The blessing is not that the loss is good, but that God does not waste it. He draws close and holds you fast.

“When the worst happens in the life of a child of God, the best remains, and the very best is yet to be.”¹
— Corrie ten Boom

We are also blessed when we stop comparing and grasping. When you are content with who God made you to be and what He has placed in your hands, you discover you already have what really matters. And when you hunger for God more than for recognition or comfort, you find a satisfaction this world cannot offer. You begin to see Him at work in the ordinary moments of your day.

That blessing then overflows into how you treat others. You care, you show mercy, and you help people work together instead of tearing each other apart. Sometimes that kind of life brings pushback, but even then Jesus says you are blessed, because it drives you deeper into His Kingdom. So wherever you are today, remember that you are not abandoned. You are seen, you are held, and you are blessed, even in the places that hurt the most.

Reflection

  1. Is there an area of life where you feel “at the end of your rope” right now? If so, what might it look like to invite God’s rule and presence into that place?
  2. How have loss, disappointment, or grief opened you up to experience God’s nearness in a deeper way than before?
  3. What is one practical way you can cultivate a deeper hunger for God this week, and how might that shape the way you love and serve the people around you?

Prayer
Ask God to meet you in your places of weakness and need. Pray for a deeper hunger for Him, a content heart, and the grace to bring mercy and peace to others throughout your day.
